Description
This banana cellulosic fabric is a modern, plant-based textile made from the cellulose extracted from banana plant stems—a part of the plant that is usually discarded after fruit harvest. Instead of wasting this agricultural by-product, the fibers are processed into a refined, spinnable cellulose, creating a sustainable, high-performance textile with a natural look and luxurious feel.
The process begins by collecting banana pseudostems after the fruit is harvested. These stems are mechanically crushed and softened to release their cellulose. The extracted pulp is then purified and converted into fine filaments through a controlled chemical process, similar to how lyocell, modal, or viscose are made. These filaments are then spun into yarn and woven into fabric, resulting in a textile that is smooth, breathable, biodegradable, and exceptionally soft.
Important note: While the raw material is plant-based, banana cellulosic fiber is a regenerated (semi-synthetic) textile, meaning it is made by chemically processing natural cellulose into usable fiber. It should not be considered a raw or mechanically extracted banana fiber.
At 185 GSM, this fabric sits in a light-to-medium weight range, offering fluid drape with enough body for garments and soft furnishings. It has a clean, modern surface with a gentle natural sheen and a cool, skin-friendly touch. The fabric is moisture-absorbing, breathable, and temperature-regulating, making it comfortable in warm as well as transitional climates.
