What are the wash & care instructions for my Wool Fabric?

Wash and Care for Wool Fabric

Wool fabric is a durable and versatile material, but proper care is essential to maintain its softness and shape. Always check the care label for specific instructions, as some wool garments are machine washable while others require hand washing or dry cleaning.

Washing: Use cool water and a gentle detergent designed for wool. Avoid hot water, as it can shrink the fibers. For machine washing, select a wool or delicate cycle. Hand wash by soaking for a few minutes and gently squeezing—never wring or twist.

Drying: Reshape and lay flat on a towel to air dry. Avoid tumble drying and direct sunlight.

Storage: Clean and store wool items in a cool, dry place with moth repellents like cedar. Following these steps ensures your wool fabric stays beautiful and long-lasting.

How much shrinkage should we expect when we wash the fabric?

How much shrinkage should we expect when we wash the fabric?

The shrinkage percentage of wool fabric depends on the type of wool, how it’s processed, and how it’s washed. Generally:

  • Unwashed wool or untreated wool (e.g., handwoven or raw wool): Shrinkage can be significant, ranging between 10–30% if exposed to heat or agitation.
  • Superwash wool or treated wool (machine washable): Shrinkage is minimal, usually under 5%, due to special chemical treatments that reduce felting.

To avoid unwanted shrinkage, always use cold water, or a gentle detergent, and avoid high heat during drying. For precise results, prewash the fabric before cutting or sewing.
