Wash and Care for Wool Fabric

How much shrinkage should we expect when we wash the fabric?

The shrinkage percentage of wool fabric depends on the type of wool, how it’s processed, and how it’s washed. Generally:

Unwashed wool or untreated wool (e.g., handwoven or raw wool): Shrinkage can be significant, ranging between 10–30% if exposed to heat or agitation.
Superwash wool or treated wool (machine washable): Shrinkage is minimal, usually under 5%, due to special chemical treatments that reduce felting.

To avoid unwanted shrinkage, always use cold water, or a gentle detergent, and avoid high heat during drying. For precise results, prewash the fabric before cutting or sewing.
